Seven Journalists Who Tell The Truth
Real journalism and investigative reporting have mostly been replaced by talking points and popular narratives. But these individuals still seek to report the truth—even at great cost.
The investigative journalists and honest reporters linked below share a common quality: they care deeply about truth and living in accordance with reality. Moreover, these brave men and women are willing to report the truth even at great personal cost; indeed, they have all faced a barrage of hate and false accusations, some have been banned from social media platforms, and others have suffered the loss of jobs and financial security. Despite this adversity and intense pressure to stop writing and publishing, these individuals continue to report the truth about events and policies. Were it not for the reporting of these honest journalists, many of the harms being inflicted on an uninformed population would continue without question or opposition.
Links to these individuals and their reporting is not an endorsement of everything they write or say; in fact, I may disagree strongly with some of their political positions and moral choices. But these men and women strive to rely on facts and data in their analyses, and they are willing to contradict popular narratives if the evidence shows the narrative to be wrong or deceitful (which is often the case). Their desire to follow the evidence and to report the truth makes their writing and other journalistic endeavors worthy of our attention and support. Without men and women who are willing to question official narratives and who are truly willing to speak truth to power, our society would remain in darkness, and we would be in even greater danger of losing our liberties forever.
Glenn Greenwald
Glenn Greenwald became well-known for his reporting on NSA spying in 2013, publishing documents and materials provided by Edward Snowden. Greenwald worked for The Guardian until 2013 when he co-founded The Intercept in order to continue his journalistic endeavors without pressure from corporate interests. Greenwald resigned from The Intercept in October 2020, as even the news organization he co-founded attempted to censor his writing. Greenwald now publishes at his own Substack so that he can continue to report the truth. Greenwald's Substack can be accessed below.
Jonathan Turley
For those desiring honest and thorough legal analyses of recent Supreme Court decisions and various government policies (along with a host of other issues), Jonathan Turley’s writings are an excellent resource. From Turley’s website:
“Professor Jonathan Turley is a nationally recognized legal scholar who has written extensively in areas ranging from constitutional law to legal theory to tort law. He has written over three dozen academic articles that have appeared in a variety of leading law journals at Cornell, Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, Northwestern, University of Chicago, and other schools. After a stint at Tulane Law School, Professor Turley joined the George Washington faculty in 1990 and, in 1998, was given the prestigious Shapiro Chair for Public Interest Law, the youngest chaired professor in the school’s history. In addition to his extensive publications, Professor Turley has served as counsel in some of the most notable cases in the last two decades including the representation of whistleblowers, military personnel, judges, members of Congress, and a wide range of other clients.”
Turley’s website can be found here.
Alex Berenson
Alex Berenson is a former reporter for The New York Times who also launched his own Substack to avoid censorship. I first learned of Berenson in early 2020 through his reporting on covid policies, particularly the safety and efficacy of the covid vaccines. I’ve watched multiple interviews and reviewed tremendous amounts of data and evidence that Berenson has presented, and I can honestly say he is one of very few reporters who have been willing to question the prevailing covid narrative. For his willingness to share information that contradicts the narrative (but that could save the lives of many people), Berenson’s Twitter account was permanently suspended in August 2020. Berenson can be more sarcastic than other journalists, but the evidence he presents on his Substack is virtually unimpeachable. If you are looking for original, evidence-based reporting on the covid vaccines and other policies, along with legitimate critiques of corporate media’s unwillingness to report evidence that contradicts the narrative, consider reviewing Berenson’s Substack.
Bari Weiss
Bari Weiss served as an opinion writer and editor at The New York Times from 2017-2020. Prior to her stint with the Times, Weiss worked as an op-ed and book review editor at The Wall Street Journal and a senior editor at Tablet Magazine. Weiss now writes at her own Susbtack where she also publishes guest posts from individuals who have been affected by cancel culture and progressive ideologies. From her Substack:
“There are tens of millions of Americans who aren’t on the hard left or the hard right who feel that the world has gone mad. Science is at the mercy of politics. Identity trumps ideas. In the name of progress, art is erased and history is rewritten. Obvious truths are dangerous to say out loud.”
Matt Taibbi
Matt Taibbi offers thorough and independent analysis on a wide range of topics. From his Substack:
“I grew up an admirer of investigative reporters like the great Seymour Hersh, narrative journalists like Rolling Stone’s Hunter Thompson, and independent muckrakers like I.F. Stone (I was fortunate to win the 2020 Izzy Award for independent journalism, named after Stone). I try to take a little from each model, trying to report on complex topics like finance, congressional procedure and military contracting in clear, accessible language. I will also continue the Rolling Stone tradition of presidential campaign reporting (I’ve covered five presidential campaigns), and will also work on various creative projects, including true crime reporting, serialized books, and video explainers.
With the Substack model, I’m trying to emulate the pure independence of Stone, who provided critical information about the American government for decades with just a printing press and a small base of subscribers.”
Note: Rolling Stone has recently proved to be captured by corporate interests and prevailing narratives on covid and other topics. This is likely one more reason Taibbi decided to strike out on his own with his Substack.
Abigail Shrier
I recently became aware of Abigail Shrier during an interview about her recent book, Irreversible Damage. From her website:
“Abigail Shrier is an award-winning journalist and best-selling author of Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters (2020). A graduate of Columbia College, University of Oxford, and Yale Law School, her work regularly appears in the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, and other publications.”
In addition to her incredibly important (and much-maligned) book, Shrier writes frequently about the repressive censorship of views that contradict the accepted narrative on human sexuality (as well as other issues). She is an outspoken advocate for other independent journalists and seeks to embolden students to stand against censorship and to understand the tremendous importance of free speech.
Jordan Schachtel
Jordan Schachtel is an independent journalist who has seen through the covid narrative and has provided insightful commentary on government responses over the past two years. From his Substack:
“The ‘new normal’ has come upon us without the consent of the governed. With this regular newsletter, you’ll find world class original reporting on the big issues of our time. I report on the big trends both in the United States and across the globe, where we are all dealing with crises caused by an out of control political elite and ruling class."
Like the other journalists linked here, Schachtel is willing to challenge the prevailing narrative with evidence of what is actually happening in our world.
